About Sui Ryu Ren
Sui Ryu Ren was founded in 2019 as a group dedicated to performing and celebrating Japan’s traditional Awa Odori dance. As part of the KELOWNA JAPANESE LANGUAGE SOCIETY, our mission is to preserve this cultural treasure for future generations while sharing the beauty of Japanese performing arts with people in Canada.
From its very inception, Sui Ryu Ren has been driven by a passion for tradition and a desire to connect cultures.
Awaodori: A Dance to Lift Everyone's Spirits!
Awaodori is a dance that embodies the spirit of joy and togetherness, inviting everyone to let loose and have fun. Born over 400 years ago in Tokushima, Shikoku, it’s one of Japan’s most beloved traditional arts.

Today, Awaodori groups have sprung up across Japan, making summer festivals even more vibrant. In 2024, Tokushima’s Awaodori drew an astounding 100,000 performers and one million spectators, showcasing its enduring appeal.
The magic lies in its contrasts: the energetic and free-flowing men’s dance versus the delicate, precise movements of the women’s dance, all set to the rhythmic beats of Japanese drums, bells, and flutes.

Awaodori’s true essence is live performance—dance and music seamlessly intertwined. And here’s the best part: spectators are often invited to join in! Imagine the thrill of dancing and making music together in a wave of unity and energy. Let’s dance, connect, and celebrate!
